With the MLS primary transfer window set to close next week, midfielder Omir Fernandez has joined the Portland Timbers from the Colorado Rapids, according to GIVEMESPORT. The deal is worth $200,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM), with an additional $50,000 in performance-based incentives.

Fernandez, 26, had featured in all eight games this season for Colorado, though exclusively as a substitute, logging just 182 minutes. He now heads to Portland in search of a bigger role, where he could gain more minutes even with the recent return of DP winger Jonathan Rodriguez from injury.

Known for his versatility, Fernandez can operate centrally or on either wing. He adds depth to a Timbers squad that’s looking to maintain momentum after a strong start to the season. Fernandez made 153 career MLS regular season appearances for the New York Red Bulls and Rapids, with his best season coming in 2023, notching six goals and three assists in under 1,700 minutes.

Colorado brought in Teddy Ku-DiPietro from D.C. United during the offseason, adding him to a crowded attacking unit led by Djordje Mihailovic and Rafa Navarro. With Ku-DiPietro now fit and making his debut, Fernandez became expendable.

Both Portland and Colorado sit at 14 points after eight matches, and this move aims to bolster depth for the long MLS campaign.
