Olger Escobar’s Journey: From U-17 Prospect to Gold Cup Breakout Star
At just 18 years old, Olger Escobar was named the Best Young Player of the 2025 Gold Cup, a recognition that capped a steady rise through Guatemala’s national team system. What began as a promising U-17 call-up has now become a reality: Escobar is not only part of the senior team, but one of its most exciting stars.
Born in the U.S. but raised with a deep love for Guatemala, Escobar trained in the New England Revolution academy, where he earned MVP honors in the MLS NEXT U-17 league and helped the U-19 side win the MLS NEXT Cup. His first national team appearance came in 2022 under Marvin Cabrera, and he progressed rapidly through the U-17 and U-20 squads.
In the 2025 Gold Cup, Escobar scored two crucial goals and stood out in the semifinal against the United States, energizing the team upon entering and scoring in the 80th minute. With 14 caps and three goals already for the senior squad, he now wears the No. 20 shirt—once worn by Carlos “Pescadito” Ruiz, who has praised the young forward’s potential.
Speaking to CF Montreal, Escobar called the tournament “an incredible experience” and emphasized Guatemala’s historic semifinal run. With World Cup qualifiers starting in September, Escobar looks ready to lead the next chapter of Guatemalan football.
