Okoye Axed from Final AFCON Squad as Chelle Picks Uzoho
Nigeria head coach Eric Sékou Chelle has released his final 28-man squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, confirming the dramatic omission of Maduka Okoye and the return of Francis Uzoho. The Super Eagles begin their Group C campaign in 10 days, and Chelle says the team is ready for “a strong tournament…”.
Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Stanley Nwabali headline the squad, which blends experienced regulars with in-form newcomers. Key defensive options include Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, Zaidu Sanusi, Chidozie Awaziem and Bright Osayi-Samuel. In midfield, Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka, Alex Iwobi and Raphael Onyedika provide stability, while Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon join Osimhen and Lookman in attack.
Uzoho returns to the squad “ahead of Maduka Okoye…”, while defender Igoh Ogbu and striker Paul Onuachu also make their way back. First-time call-ups include Ryan Alebiosu, Usman Muhammed, Ebenezer Akinsanmiro, Tochukwu Nnadi and Salim Fago Lawal.
Nigeria will face Egypt in a friendly on December 16 before moving to Fès, where they will open their AFCON campaign against Tanzania on December 23, followed by Tunisia on December 27 and Uganda on December 30.
