Okocha Backs Olympic Gold Heroes Over AFCON 2025 Super Eagles

Nigerian football legend Austin Jay Jay Okocha has sparked a major debate after claiming the current AFCON 2025 Super Eagles cannot compete with the team that won Olympic gold in 1996.

Speaking in a video shared on X, the former captain was asked who would win a match between both sides and replied without hesitation. His answer was blunt, predicting an easy victory for the Atlanta 1996 heroes.

Okocha said, “No chance… We will get it, it’s how many they will collect.” When Alex Iwobi was mentioned, he waved it off, saying “Abegi.”

He listed stars from his era, saying, “We’re talking of Yekini, Sunday Oliseh, Nwankwo Kanu, Amokachi, Taribo West… These boys are learners.” The 1996 team made history by winning Africa’s first Olympic football gold after famous wins over Brazil and Argentina.

Okocha’s comments have divided fans, with many backing today’s stars like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman. As the Super Eagles head to AFCON 2025 in Morocco, the debate continues, adding extra motivation to prove the legend wrong.

Social media remains as Nigerians argue legacy, pride, talent, history, and future.
