Official: Thembinkosi Lorch Joins Wydad Casablanca on Loan
Thembinkosi Lorch, a winger from South Africa, has joined Wydad Casablanca of Morocco on a six-month loan with a buyout option from Mamelodi Sundowns. In an effort to bolster their roster for both home and European competitions, Wydad has signed the 30-year-old as their fourth acquisition of the winter transfer window.
Lorch, a former Orlando Pirates star, arrives at a crucial time for Wydad, who are looking to revive their season under coach Rulani Mokwena. The club unveiled him in a stylized video, similar to Al Ahly’s announcement of Anthony Modeste last summer.
Why Did Sundowns Let Lorch Leave?
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso explained that Lorch was unhappy at the club due to a lack of game time.
“It’s important that players feel happy and in the right environment to perform. Lorch hasn’t played much in recent years, so it was necessary to let him go,” Cardoso said.
Lorch will also reunite with Rulani Mokwena, who coached him at Orlando Pirates before signing him for Sundowns.
Wydad’s Busy Transfer Window
Lorch’s arrival is part of Wydad’s active January transfer window, which saw them sign:
Mohamed El Jadidi (20-year-old defender from Chabab Mohammedia)
Mickaël Malsa (French-born midfielder with La Liga experience)
Fahad Moufi (Moroccan right-back from Vitória Guimarães)
Wydad’s League Position & Ambitions
Wydad currently sits fourth in the Moroccan Botola Pro with 33 points, trailing league leaders RS Berkane by 13 points. However, with key reinforcements, they aim to make a strong push in the second half of the season and compete in continental competitions.
Lorch, who is renowned for his quickness, inventiveness, and big-game displays, will be hoping to make an impression right away in Casablanca.
