OFFICIAL. The Europa League champions have bought the Italian national team striker
Atalanta, having won the Europa League last season and qualified for the Champions League, was compelled to enter the transfer market in search of a new leading striker. The club wasted no time in addressing this need.
The official club website announced the signing of Italian national team forward Mateo Retegui from Genoa. Atalanta paid the "Grifoni" €22 million for the transfer. Details of Retegui's contract with Atalanta have not been disclosed.
Retegui is expected to replace Gianluca Scamacca, who suffered a torn ACL during pre-season training and is sidelined for most of the upcoming season.
The 25-year-old Retegui scored 7 goals and provided 2 assists in 29 Serie A matches last season.
For the Italian national team, Retegui has netted 4 goals in 12 appearances.
