The English Premier League has officially approved the calendar for the 2026/27 season, which will kick off a week later than usual, marking the latest start in the competition's history. This decision was made at a shareholders' meeting in response to an overloaded global football calendar and a drive to reduce player fatigue.

The league's official website announced that the new season will get underway on August 22, 2026, with the final matchday scheduled for May 30, 2027—several days later than the traditional dates. The league emphasizes that additional breaks will allow players to recover after the expanded World Cup, which wraps up in mid-July and will feature 48 teams in Canada, the USA, and Mexico.

The Premier League statement highlights that player welfare remains a top priority, and the season has been shifted to allow for optimal recovery. The campaign will conclude a week before the Champions League final, set for June 5, 2027.

According to the revised structure, the 2026/27 season will feature 33 weekend matchdays and just five midweek fixtures. The schedule is designed to minimize overlap with European competitions. A key change concerns the festive period: during the Christmas and New Year block, there will be no two matchdays within a 60-hour span—an obligation the league has taken on to combat the traditional December fixture congestion.
