Official: PSG leader suspended for three matches. What happened?
Nuno Mendes will have plenty of time to think about his emotional reaction in the French Super Cup.
Details: Paris Saint-Germain defender Nuno Mendes has officially been handed a three-match suspension following his straight red card in the Trophée des Champions clash against Lens. The disciplinary commission made its decision on Wednesday after reviewing the incident from the closing stages of the match.
Mendes was sent off in the 86th minute after an altercation with Lens player Michal Skóras. The Portuguese full-back struck his opponent with his elbow during the episode, and referee Jérémie Pignard immediately showed him a straight red card. The referee's report subsequently described the incident as a violent act, which left the defender facing a substantial suspension.
The punishment means Luis Enrique will be unable to call on one of his key defenders for PSG's first three Ligue 1 fixtures of the new season. Mendes is set to miss the games against Rennes, Lille and Monaco before becoming available again.
The dismissal came near the end of a frustrating evening for the Parisians, who were beaten 1-0 by Lens and missed out on the Trophée des Champions. It is also worth noting that the red card against Lens was Mendes' first dismissal during his PSG career.
