Portugal's 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign came to an end in the Round of 16, and the national team will now also be parting ways with its head coach.
Details: According to an official statement from the Portuguese Football Federation, head coach Roberto Martínez has left the national team following the expiration of his contract.
Quote: "The Portuguese Football Federation thanks Roberto Martínez and his coaching staff for their professionalism and dedication over the past three and a half years — a period highlighted by the 2025 UEFA Nations League triumph — as well as for the commitment, professionalism, and passion with which he embraced this project, and for the respect he consistently showed towards the country and Portuguese football," the statement read.
Portugal have already begun the process of appointing a new head coach for the national team.
Reminder: Cristiano Ronaldo set an unwanted record at the World Cup. The Portuguese superstar once again found himself in the spotlight, but this time for all the wrong reasons.
