Details: Edin Džeko has officially announced that he will retire from international football. The legendary Bosnia and Herzegovina striker confirmed that his next appearance for the national team will also be his last, with the farewell scheduled for October 2 against Sweden.
Džeko admitted that he had often wondered when the moment to say goodbye would arrive, but the emotions surrounding the decision proved stronger than he had imagined. The 40-year-old explained that representing his country had always occupied a special place in his career.
“Nothing in my career has ever compared to the pride I have felt every single time I wore that shirt,” Džeko said.
He added that he now feels the time has come to step aside after giving everything he could to the national team for almost two decades.
The forward also called on supporters to be there for his farewell against Sweden so they can share one final emotional night together. Džeko currently has 151 appearances for Bosnia and Herzegovina, meaning the Sweden clash is set to become his 152nd and final international match. It is worth noting that he is both the national team’s all-time leading scorer with 73 goals and its record appearance-holder.
