Official: Dimitri Payet Announces Retirement After 21-Year Professional Football Career
French midfielder Dimitri Payet has announced his retirement from professional football, ending a celebrated 21-year career that saw him shine in both club and international competitions.
The 38-year-old, who had been without a club for nine months following his spell at Vasco da Gama in Brazil, made the announcement in a heartfelt halftime interview during Marseille’s Ligue 1 match against Lille at the Stade Vélodrome.
Payet expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported him throughout his career.
“I want to thank everybody — all those who shared these 20 years with me. It was something exceptional,” he said.
Reflecting on his journey, he added, “I come from an island, and my dream was to become a professional. I made it and played at the highest level for 20 years. I represented my national team, and today marks the end of a beautiful journey.”
