Following Monterrey’s 1-1 draw with Inter Milan, Lucas Ocampos quickly turned his focus to Saturday’s showdown against River Plate in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. The former River player called the match “special,” not only for its emotional significance but also for what it means in Group E’s qualification race.

“We know what’s at stake,” Ocampos said in the mixed zone, according to Bolavip. “River will be a tough opponent, but we’ll start thinking about them tomorrow.” The midfielder joined Monterrey from Sevilla in mid-2024, after previously being linked with a return to River.

Rayados impressed in their opener, holding the Champions League runners-up and showing they belong on this stage. “Many doubted how we’d play,” said Ocampos. “But we proved we can compete with anyone. We represented the club and Mexico well.”

He also praised veteran defender Sergio Ramos, who scored the opener against Inter: “He’s our captain, he brings us energy. He’s enjoying it, and so are we. Hopefully he keeps scoring headers—he seems to like them.”

River Plate and Monterrey will face off on Saturday, June 21 at 10:00 p.m. (Argentina time) at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena.
