NSC Moves to Tie Down Chelle After AFCON Brilliance
Nigeria’s National Sports Commission has confirmed plans to begin talks with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle over a contract extension following Nigeria’s outing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Chelle’s current deal with the Nigeria Football Federation is due to expire in a few months, prompting early action to ensure continuity.
Under Chelle, Nigeria finished third in Morocco, scored 35 goals, conceded 13, set a record with 14 goals at one AFCON, and kept four clean sheets while going unbeaten.
NSC Director General Bukola Olopade revealed, “I had dinner with him two days ago… That same night, I called the NFF president… hopefully by Tuesday or Wednesday, we will all sit down together.” He dismissed rumours of a move abroad, saying, “Eric Chelle is not going anywhere,” adding that Nigeria now has “surplus quality across all departments.”
Olopade added that, “Today, I am glad our conviction paid off.”
