Nothing has been decided yet. Gianni Infantino comments on the situation with World Cup matches in Mexico
Another issue has emerged ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
Details: FIFA president Gianni Infantino, 55, addressed the recent reports in the media suggesting that Mexico could lose its right to host 2026 World Cup matches due to the escalating military and political tensions between the country's authorities and drug cartels.
Mexico has been plunged into chaos for several days following the assassination of a powerful drug lord, sparking concern among officials from participating countries about the safety of holding World Cup fixtures in Mexico.
Nevertheless, the FIFA president remains optimistic that Mexico will be able to stabilize the situation and host matches of such a grand scale with the necessary security measures in place:
"I have absolute confidence in President Claudia Sheinbaum and in Mexico. We are in regular contact with the presidency and the authorities," Infantino stated.
Mexico is scheduled to kick off the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a match against South Africa on June 11.
