No Uruguayan Clásico in Intermedio as Peñarol, Nacional Head Separate Groups

With just one matchday left in the Apertura, the structure of the 2025 Torneo Intermedio has taken shape. According to FútbolUy, the top four teams—Liverpool, Nacional, Juventud, and Peñarol—have locked in their spots and will lead the two separate groups for the upcoming short tournament.
Group A will feature recently crowned champions Liverpool and Peñarol, along with the teams finishing 5th, 8th, 9th, 12th, 13th, and 16th. Defensor Sporting (5th) has already secured its place, while Cerro Largo (8th) and Plaza Colonia (9th) are expected to join pending final results.
In Group B, Nacional is grouped with Juventud and Montevideo City Torque, who secured 3rd and 10th respectively. The rest of the group will be filled by the 6th, 7th, 11th, 14th, and 15th-placed sides. Racing (6th) and Boston River (7th) will confirm their participation depending on this week’s results.
This format means there will be no clásico in the Intermedio, with Nacional and Peñarol assigned to different groups. Liverpool, meanwhile, has a clear path to potentially face both heavyweights in different stages. As the second short tournament of the year approaches, competition continues to intensify in Uruguay’s dynamic league system.
