The club from Pamplona insisted that Barcelona should receive a technical defeat due to Iñigo Martínez's participation in the match. The experienced defender had not played for the Spanish national team due to an injury. According to FIFA rules, a player can only play at the club level five days after missing an international break.

However, the rule does not apply if there is a special agreement between the club and the football federation. This was the case with Iñigo Martínez.

The Barcelona vs. Osasuna match was played two days after the international fixtures and had been postponed earlier due to the death of a member of the Catalan club's medical staff, Carles Minyarro García.
