No national team return? Ronaldo's sister shocks with statement
Cristiano Ronaldo's future with Portugal is looking increasingly uncertain.
Details: Cristiano Ronaldo's sister Elma Aveiro has cast serious doubt on the legendary forward's possible return to the Portugal national team. Speaking on the sidelines of a book presentation in Lisbon, an event also attended by Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus, she was asked whether the 41-year-old could represent his country again. Elma replied that the situation is currently more "no" than "yes", adding that both Ronaldo and Jesus remain hurt by what happened.
According to Elma, the dispute has effectively reached a standstill and a reconciliation between the two sides would be extremely difficult. She also expressed sadness over the treatment of her brother, arguing that people in Portugal too quickly forget everything he has previously done for the national team:
“At the moment, it looks more like no than yes. I think both Cristiano and Jorge Jesus are hurt by what happened. It is something they went through, not me, so I can only speak from my brother’s perspective. The situation seems to have reached a standstill, and we will have to see what happens. I don’t know whether reconciliation is possible because it is very complicated. After you feel betrayed, returning to normal is extremely difficult. I’m also saddened because people in Portugal unfortunately tend to forget everything that has already been done and think things should now be handled differently. I’m almost lost for words. It is very difficult to watch my brother go through this because he is one of the people who least deserved it.”
Ronaldo's mother Dolores Aveiro had also recently spoken publicly about the situation. She said her son was not being given the recognition he deserved and criticized the way the dispute with the national-team coaching staff had developed.
Cristiano is currently provisionally suspended from Portugal after the disciplinary process opened by the Portuguese Football Federation following his departure from the national-team camp. A final decision in the case has not yet been announced, while the forward has already returned to club action with Al Nassr.
It is worth noting that Ronaldo remains the all-time record holder in men's international football for both goals and appearances. According to UEFA data updated in October 2026, he has scored 146 goals in 234 matches for Portugal.
