Nigeria’s dream of returning to the FIFA World Cup will be tested on Thursday when the Super Eagles take on Gabon in the first semifinal of the CAF World Cup playoffs at the Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.

Only one African ticket is available for next March’s intercontinental playoffs, with Nigeria, Gabon, Cameroon, and DR Congo all in the race. While Nigeria’s history and star power make them favourites, Gabon’s confidence and energy promise a fierce contest.

The Super Eagles are desperate to make a comeback after missing the 2022 edition in Qatar. Gabon, who have never qualified for a World Cup, are chasing history and hope to create a fairy-tale moment for their fans.

On paper, Nigeria have the advantage. They are three-time African champions, ranked 36 places above Gabon, and boast back-to-back African Footballer of the Year winners in Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman. But Gabon, armed with belief and two dangerous forwards, have shown that reputation counts for little in football.

Road to the Playoffs

Nigeria’s qualification journey was far from smooth. They finished second in Group C behind South Africa, winning four, drawing five, and losing once. However, Eritrea’s withdrawal from Group E helped their record qualify among the best runners-up. Their playoff ticket was sealed on the final day with a 4-0 win over Benin Republic in Uyo.

Gabon’s path was more convincing. The Panthers won eight of their ten matches, collected 25 points, and scored 22 goals. They finished just a point behind Ivory Coast in Group F but recorded the best performance among all playoff teams.

Head-to-Head

Nigeria have dominated past meetings, winning five of nine matches, drawing three, and losing one. Their last encounter came in 2005, when goals from Nwankwo Kanu and Julius Aghahowa secured a 2-0 win. But nearly 20 years later, Gabon have grown into a more dangerous side, producing stars like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Team News

Gabon’s coach Thierry Mouyouma has named a strong squad led by captain Aubameyang, supported by Denis Bouanga and midfielder Mario Lemina. Nigeria’s Eric Chelle relies on Osimhen, Lookman, Alex Iwobi, and Wilfred Ndidi, while Maduka Okoye returns in goal.

Prediction

Nigeria’s experience and attacking quality may prove decisive, but Gabon’s hunger could make it close. Expect a tense battle that might end 2-1 in favour of the Super Eagles, keeping their World Cup hopes alive.
