Nigeria national team: Eric Chelle's future uncertain?

Nigeria saw its dream of participating in the 2026 World Cup crumble after its defeat against the Democratic Republic of Congo. In the wake of this defeat for the Super Eagles, questions are being raised about the growing difficulties faced by Eric Chelle since taking over.

After his appointment in January 2025 to revitalize a national team seeking stability, Eric Chelle has encountered numerous obstacles, despite the depth of the Nigerian squad and the presence of talented players competing in the world's top leagues.

What's regrettable is that the Malian coach has never been universally popular with the public. Eric Chelle has, however, achieved some good results. After eleven matches, this is his only defeat. It was perhaps the only match he shouldn't have lost. Nevertheless, his draws felt like defeats to the fans.

It's true that this elimination is a huge blow for Nigeria, a team accustomed to major international competitions. This defeat could therefore seal Eric Chelle's fate as head coach.

The Malian coach, already criticized for his results and performance, could pay the price for a project that was never truly realized.
