Nigeria Drop in FIFA Ranking as African Rivals Close the Gap
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have slipped one place to 37th in the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking, though they remain Africa’s top-ranked team. The drop ends their six-ranking stay at 36th, but their continental dominance is still intact despite rising competition.
The ranking update follows a quiet period for Nigeria, who only featured in their WAFCON qualifiers against Benin Republic – a 2-0 win away and a 1-1 draw in Abeokuta. The results sealed their 2026 WAFCON ticket but did little to improve their global position.
While Nigeria sat out the November–December friendlies, their rivals gained valuable points. Ghana jumped five places to 62nd after their strong WAFCON finish and a spirited friendly showing against England. South Africa also impressed, beating Morocco 2-0, while Morocco earlier drew 1-1 with Zimbabwe. Zambia’s 1-1 draw with Malawi and 3-1 win over Zimbabwe added to the growing pressure on Nigeria.
These activities narrowed the gap within Africa’s top five: Nigeria (37th), South Africa (55th), Ghana (62nd), Zambia (64th), and Morocco (66th).
Globally, Spain lead, followed by the United States, Germany, England, and Sweden. As Nigeria prepare for next year’s WAFCON in Morocco, they face increasing pressure from rivals eager to challenge their reign.
