Nigeria Beat Gabon 4–1 to Progress to African Final of 2026 World Cup Playoffs
Victor Osimhen struck twice in extra time as Nigeria defeated Gabon 4–1 in the CAF World Cup playoff semifinals in Rabat, Morocco, on Thursday. Chidera Ejuke also found the net, sealing a crucial win that keeps the Super Eagles’ World Cup dream alive.
Nigeria, who finished second in their qualifying group, will now face the winner between Congo DR and Cameroon for a place in the six-team inter-confederation playoff in March.
The game remained tense and goalless for much of the first half before Akor Adams capitalised on a defensive error, rounded the Gabonese goalkeeper, and slotted home to give Nigeria the lead. Gabon equalised late in normal time when Mario Lemina’s deflected shot beat Stanley Nwabali at his near post.
Osimhen missed two late chances to win it in regulation time, but made amends in extra time. The Galatasaray striker converted from close range before Ejuke added a fine solo goal. Osimhen then struck again to put the result beyond doubt.
Nigeria’s build-up to the match was clouded by a dispute over unpaid bonuses, which was resolved a day before kickoff. Team captain William Troost-Ekong wrote, “We are together and, as before, focused on the games ahead!”
Nigeria are chasing redemption after missing the 2022 World Cup, while Gabon’s wait for a first appearance continues.
