Nicolás Fernández Mercau Joins NYCFC, Bringing a Financial Boost to San Lorenzo

City Football Group has added another asset to its global portfolio, signing Nicolás Fernández Mercau from Elche to New York City FC. The 25-year-old Argentine midfielder joins the MLS side in a move that also benefits his former club, San Lorenzo. As Cadena 3 reports, the Buenos Aires club will receive nearly €1 million through training compensation and a future resale clause.
Fernández Mercau, a consistent performer in Spain since his 2022 transfer, impressed with his technical ability and attacking versatility—even after Elche’s relegation. His signing adds depth to NYCFC, currently pushing for a playoff spot in MLS.
The move comes as NYCFC defeated Toronto FC 3-1 in Week 19, with goals from Wolf, Ilenic, and O’Toole. Meanwhile, the club also announced that Serbian forward Jovan Mijatovic has been loaned to Belgium’s Oud-Heverlee Leuven until June 2026. The Bronx-based team is clearly in reshaping mode, preparing for a crucial second half of the season.
