The NHL and the NHL Players' Association have announced the return of the World Cup of Hockey, scheduled for February 2028. The tournament will be jointly organized by the NHL and NHLPA and is set to become part of a new, consistent international competition calendar: Olympics – World Cup – Olympics. The news was shared on the official NHL website.

The format and host cities for the World Cup will be determined in the coming months, with games planned for both North America and Europe. Unlike the 2016 edition, the 2028 tournament will feature only national teams—no combined squads will participate.

It has also been confirmed that the tournament will be played under NHL rules and officiated by NHL referees. Eight national teams are expected to take part, divided into two groups.

The 2028 World Cup of Hockey will be the fourth tournament in history. Previous editions took place in 1996, 2004, and 2016. Team Canada has claimed the title twice, while the United States have won once.
