The Nigeria Football Federation has welcomed Arthur Okonkwo’s decision to switch his international allegiance from England to Nigeria, describing the move as a boost to its goalkeeping options.

NFF Director of Communications Dr. Ademola Olajire said the federation is “always excited to have another good player committing to Nigeria…”, adding that the technical crew is “delighted to have another option in the goalkeeping department.”

Okonkwo, born in England to Nigerian parents, previously represented England at youth level but has not received senior call-ups.

The switch followed a June meeting in London with coach Eric Chelle, who outlined his plans and encouraged the goalkeeper to change nationality. Although he missed the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, Okonkwo will be available for 2027 qualifiers.
