NFF Petitions FIFA, World Cup Hope Rekindled
Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup have been revived after the Nigeria Football Federation submitted a formal protest against DR Congo over alleged player eligibility violations. The Super Eagles were eliminated in November after losing on penalties, but questions later arose over the status of players used by the Congolese side.
Reports suggest up to six players may not have fully completed the nationality switch process under Congolese law, which forbids dual citizenship. Concerns were also raised about players holding European passports and being over 21.
Confirming the action, NFF Secretary General Mohammed Sanusi said, “We’re waiting… the rules are very clear, and we have submitted our petition.” He added that FIFA cleared the players based on documents provided, but Nigeria believes “FIFA was deceived… it was fraudulent.”
FIFA will now rule.
