The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially confirmed that it has submitted a formal petition to FIFA over the alleged use of ineligible players by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) during their crucial CAF playoff match for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

NFF Secretary General, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, disclosed this development while addressing concerns surrounding the controversial encounter, which Nigeria lost to DR Congo on penalties. The defeat initially ended the Super Eagles’ hopes of qualifying for the World Cup, but the petition has now reopened the conversation.

According to Dr. Sanusi, the NFF is challenging the eligibility of several DR Congo players who reportedly hold dual nationality, which he claims violates Congolese national laws.

“We’re waiting. The Congolese rules say you cannot have a dual citizenship or nationality. Wan-Bissaka has a European passport; there are some of them that have French passports, some of them Dutch passports. The rules are very clear, and we have submitted our petition,” Sanusi stated.

Following the submission, FIFA is said to have opened an investigation into the matter, raising fresh hopes for Nigeria as the governing body reviews the eligibility of the players involved.

Multiple reports suggest that between six and nine DR Congo players who switched national allegiance may not have fully satisfied the legal requirements under Congolese law before representing the country in the playoff match.
