Newcastle has officially announced the signing of a new contract with experienced center-back Fabian Schär.

The new deal with the 32-year-old Swiss defender is valid until the summer of 2025. His previous contract was set to expire at the end of the current season, and the club risked losing him as a free agent.

Schär is a key defender for Newcastle. In the current season, he has played in 28 matches in all competitions, and in the 2022/23 season, he participated in 41 matches. Since 2018, he has played 169 games for the English club.

Before joining Newcastle, Schär played for Deportivo La Coruña, Hoffenheim, Basel, and his hometown club, Wil.

The current season has been challenging for Eddie Howe's team. After 20 rounds, Newcastle occupies the ninth position in the English Premier League table, and they were eliminated from the Champions League in the group stage, finishing in last place.
