New York Cosmos Set for 2026 Comeback with Paterson as Their New Home
The iconic New York Cosmos are set to return to professional soccer in 2026, this time from Paterson, New Jersey. According to an official announcement, the team will compete in USL League One and make Hinchliffe Stadium—an historic and recently renovated venue—their new home. The club also plans to launch a women’s pro team and invest heavily in youth development, underscoring a strong community-first approach across North Jersey.
Hinchliffe Stadium, once host to Negro League baseball greats, reopened in 2023 after a $110 million revitalization project. Now, it will welcome the most storied name in American soccer. Adofo-Wilson, a Paterson native and the stadium’s co-developer, leads the project as Cosmos Chairperson, promising affordable, high-quality soccer and local opportunities for young talent.
The Cosmos' leadership team includes Vice Chairman Giuseppe Rossi, the former Italy striker from nearby Clifton, CEO Erik Stover, and sports investor Sapna Shah. Rossi, who retired in 2023, aims to give North Jersey kids a real shot at pro careers: “There’s untapped potential here,” he said.
With the FIFA Club World Cup days away and the 2026 World Cup approaching, Governor Phil Murphy hailed the announcement as a milestone for New Jersey’s rise as a soccer hub. Paterson Mayor André Sayegh added, “Pelé once lit up Giants Stadium. Now the Cosmos will energize Hinchliffe.”
The club also unveiled a refreshed version of its iconic blade-and-ball logo, designed by Mark Jenkinson and Shawn Francis. Capelli Sport will supply kits for the 2026 campaign. Membership deposits open July 11, marking the start of a promising new chapter in Cosmos history.
