The New York Cosmos are back. Once synonymous with American soccer’s golden age, the iconic brand is returning to the field in 2026 as a USL League One expansion team, based not in New York but across the river in New Jersey. With a new home, leadership, and a vision centered on youth development, the rebooted Cosmos aim to carve a new legacy.

A new ownership group has acquired the club’s intellectual property from Rocco Commisso, the Fiorentina owner who had kept the brand dormant since the NASL folded in 2017. Among the new stakeholders is Erik Stover, a former Red Bulls and Cosmos executive, credited for bringing stars like Thierry Henry to MLS and keeping the Cosmos competitive during their NASL run.

The team will play at Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, N.J., a historic 7,800-seat venue recently restored. It marks the first time the Cosmos will have a dedicated home ground. In a nod to their storied past, they’ll revive the “Cosmos” crest from the Pelé and Beckenbauer era, although without “New York” in the name.

Helping steer the new era is Giuseppe Rossi, former Italy international and Paterson native. As vice chairman and head of soccer, Rossi will focus on a mission close to his heart: improving the development of teenage players in the U.S. system. He criticized the pressure and limitations placed on young athletes, advocating instead for quality coaching and patient progression.

This revival also aligns with broader changes in U.S. soccer. The USL is moving toward a promotion-relegation model, a bold shift from the closed structure of MLS. The Cosmos, once adversaries of MLS orthodoxy, could now help lead a more open, community-driven era of American soccer.

While much remains to be built, from the roster to the fan base, the Cosmos' reentry is about more than nostalgia. With strong local ties, new leadership, and a focus on grassroots growth, the Cosmos are aiming to be more than a brand: they want to be a force in the future of the sport.
