New UEFA Champions League rules: How standings are determined when teams have equal points uefa.com

Today marks the final round of the first-ever league stage in the UEFA Champions League. Instead of a traditional group stage, 36 teams compete in a single league format, with the top 24 advancing to the knockout phase. The top 8 teams will go directly to the round of 16, while teams ranked 9th to 24th will face off in a preliminary playoff round.

Ahead of the last matches, Dailysports explains how teams will be ranked in the standings if they finish with the same number of points.

The ranking criteria will be applied in the following order:

  1. Goal difference
  2. Goals scored
  3. Goals scored away from home
  4. Wins
  5. Away wins
  6. Higher total points earned by opponents faced in the league stage
  7. Superior collective goal difference of opponents faced in the league stage
  8. Higher total number of goals collectively scored by opponents faced in the league stage
  9. Better disciplinary record (3 points for a direct red card, 3 points for a red card following two yellows, 1 point for a yellow card)
