New Time Limit Rule for Goalkeepers Enforced in Libertadores and Sudamericana
Starting Tuesday, a significant rule change affecting goalkeepers will come into effect in Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana matches. CONMEBOL confirmed that it will enforce the new interpretation of Law 12, aimed at reducing deliberate time-wasting by goalkeepers.
The change, approved last month by the International Football Association Board (IFAB), restricts goalkeepers to holding the ball for no more than eight seconds. If that limit is exceeded, referees will now award a corner kick to the opposing team as a sanction.
“Given the compelling results of trials conducted in several countries, members approved a change to Law 12. Fouls and misconduct to reduce time-wasting by goalkeepers, who from now on may only hold the ball for up to eight seconds,” CONMEBOL stated in a circular sent to participating clubs.
The decision will be applied immediately, marking a pivotal shift in how match officials handle delays and aiming to speed up the pace of play, especially in the closing stages of competitive fixtures.
