New Rules for Goalkeepers, Additional Offside Trials and More. IFAB Introduces Several Innovations in Football Rules
On March 1, the International Football Association Board (IFAB) approved a series of changes to the football rules for the 2025/26 season.
Details. IFAB has sanctioned a new rule for goalkeepers starting next season. If a goalkeeper holds the ball in their hands for more than 8 seconds, the referee will award a corner kick to the opposing team. This is aimed at reducing time-wasting by goalkeepers.
Changes have also been made regarding referees' decisions on offside positions. Since VAR can monitor goal/no-goal decisions and the goalkeeper's exit from the field, the assistant referee must now position themselves in line with the penalty spot, which serves as the offside line.
IFAB has also decided to pre-select competitions for additional offside trials to promote attacking football and encourage goal-scoring opportunities while maintaining the sport's appeal. FIFA will conduct such trials at some upcoming FIFA competitions.
These changes will come into effect at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, which kicks off on June 14, 2025.
Reminder. Previously, we reported that the semi-automated offside system in the FA Cup will not be for everyone.
