NBA star Luka Dončić donates $500,000 to wildfire victims ahead of Lakers debut
Los Angeles Lakers' star newcomer Luka Dončić made a remarkable gesture even before his debut with his new club. The basketball player donated $500,000 to help those affected by the California wildfires, TMZ reports.
Dončić was shocked by the scale of the disaster in Los Angeles and felt compelled to help the victims of the tragedy.
"I can't believe it and I feel for all the kids who lost their homes, schools, and the places where they used to play with their friends. I am also committed to helping rebuild courts, playgrounds, and fields that were destroyed because every kid needs a safe place to play," Dončić said.
The wildfires, which raged through California from January 7 to 31, were incredibly devastating. A total of 29 people lost their lives, with several others still missing. Over 230 square kilometers of land were burned, and more than 18,000 buildings were either damaged or destroyed.
Dončić’s extraordinary act of generosity will undoubtedly enhance his popularity among fans and local residents alike.
