NBA announces celebration of first-ever World Basketball Day

Today, December 21, the NBA announced the celebration of its first-ever World Basketball Day, according to NBA Communications.
The United Nations established World Basketball Day on August 23 during the FIBA World Cup. World Basketball Day will be commemorated annually on December 21, the day when Dr. James Naismith first introduced it to the Springfield Youth Association in 1891. The YMCA presented the game of basketball.
"The NBA family is pleased to join the global basketball community in celebrating the first World Basketball Day.
Over 130 years since the game was invented by the Springfield Youth YMCA, World Basketball Day reminds us of the potential for basketball to transcend borders, cultures, and languages, bringing people together worldwide," said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
In the United States and around the world, various programs will honor this game.
