Nacional Targets Maxi Gómez in Ambitious Move for Clausura 2025

Uruguayan club Nacional is actively pursuing the signing of striker Maximiliano Gómez ahead of the 2025 Clausura tournament, according to Montevideo Portal. The club is prepared to pay the $200,000 release clause in Gómez's contract with Defensor Sporting, which becomes effective in July.
Gómez, a 28-year-old native of Paysandú, returned to Defensor Sporting in February after a stint in European football. Since his return, he has played 12 matches, totaling 1,073 minutes, with three goals and two assists.
Nacional's vice president, Flavio Perchman, confirmed the club's interest in Gómez and stated that the plan is for him to join after the conclusion of the Torneo Intermedio. He also mentioned that Gómez's agent is his brother, Carlos Gómez.
To facilitate Gómez's arrival, Nacional is working to resolve the contractual situation of Chilean forward Eduardo Vargas, negotiating an early termination. Additionally, Colombian striker Diego Herazo will not continue with the team, as his loan ends this month. Meanwhile, Gonzalo Carneiro is expected to return to official matches during the Torneo Intermedio after a long injury layoff.
Gómez's potential signing represents a significant investment by Nacional to bolster their attack and contend for the title in the latter half of the year.
