Morocco Open AFCON Quest Against Comoros
Africa’s attention turns to Rabat on Sunday as hosts Morocco open their Africa Cup of Nations campaign against Comoros in Group A. Backed by home support, the Atlas Lions are strong favourites after a flawless qualifying run and a long unbeaten streak that stretches back to August. The 2022 World Cup semi-finalists have also not lost a competitive home match in 16 years, underlining their dominance.
Comoros arrive with far less pressure, making only their second AFCON appearance after reaching the Round of 16 in 2021. Recent results have been difficult, but they will take confidence from a past competitive win in Morocco last year.
Morocco are unbeaten in four previous meetings with Comoros, including a 2-0
AFCON win in 2022. Injuries may rule out Achraf Hakimi, Sofyan Amrabat and Hamza Igmane. Coach Walid Regragui warned that “there are no easy matches in Africa”… as expectations rise ahead of kickoff.
