Morocco Moves to Prosecute Senegalese Supporters After AFCON Final Chaos
Moroccan authorities have launched prosecutions after crowd violence disrupted the AFCON 2025 final between hosts Morocco and Senegal in Rabat. Prosecutors confirmed that 18 Senegalese nationals are in custody over their alleged roles in disturbances inside Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
Defence lawyer Naima El Gallaf said the defendants appeared for an initial hearing on Thursday, but the session was postponed after both sides sought more time to prepare. The case will resume on January 29 in Rabat.
The arrests follow scenes of disorder during Sunday’s final, which Senegal won 1-0. Reports say about 1,000 Senegal supporters tried to reach the pitch before full time, causing a delay of nearly 15 minutes. Some fans allegedly threw objects, including a stadium seat, forcing security to intervene.
One Algerian supporter has also been detained. His lawyer said he is a French citizen of Algerian origin who denies involvement. Investigations continue as authorities review.
