Moroccan Federation to Pursue Legal Action After Senegal Walks Off Pitch in AFCON Final
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has announced that it will pursue legal action against the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) following Senegal’s withdrawal from the pitch during the Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco.
In an official statement, the FRMF strongly criticized the actions of the Senegalese players, coaching staff, and sections of their supporters, describing the scenes as chaotic and damaging to the integrity of the match. The incident unfolded after the referee awarded Morocco a penalty for a foul committed on Brahim Díaz inside the penalty area.
According to the Moroccan federation, the referee’s decision was correct and supported by unanimous expert opinion. Despite this, the Senegalese team reacted angrily to the call before ultimately leaving the field of play, a move that significantly disrupted the final and affected the rhythm and performance of the Moroccan players.
"The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) announces that it will pursue legal procedures with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as well as the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) to rule on the Senegalese national team's withdrawal from the pitch during the final against the Moroccan national team, as well as on the events that accompanied this decision, following the referee's announcement of a penalty deemed correct by unanimous expert opinion. This situation had a significant impact on the normal course of the match and the players' performance," the statement read.
