Following the dismissal of Martín Demichelis, Monterrey’s board is moving quickly to appoint a new head coach, aiming to have a deal finalized within a week. Per TUDN, a high-level meeting took place on Monday to outline the profile and shortlist of potential candidates for the Rayados bench.

Leading the race are Matías Almeyda and Domenec Torrent, both of whom have experience in Liga MX and are considered strong fits given their understanding of Mexican football and the pressure that comes with coaching a top-tier club like Monterrey. Torrent, in particular, reportedly received strong endorsements from the club’s Spanish players after his previous spell at Atlético de San Luis.

Other names under consideration include Gabriel Milito, Hernán Crespo, and Eduardo Domínguez. While Domínguez is said to be favored by parts of the board, his lack of experience in Mexican football raises concerns, especially after the recent failure with Demichelis under similar circumstances.

The squad officially began its offseason on May 12 and is set to return on May 26 to prepare for the 2026 FIFA Club World Cup. Monterrey will face Inter Milan in their opening match on June 17, making this coaching decision a pivotal one as the club eyes success on the international stage.
