Monnapule Saleng's Mysterious Absence: Fallout, Failed Transfer & Salary Dispute? Monnapule Saleng's Mysterious Absence: Fallout, Failed Transfer & Salary Dispute?

Monnapule Saleng, a star for the Orlando Pirates, has been out of the squad for more than three months. There are now rumors that his absence may be related to a failed transfer attempt and a pay disagreement.

Transfer Drama & Alleged Boycott

Saleng was supposedly on the verge of joining Al Ahly, but after the agreement fell through, he allegedly skipped training, which resulted in his extended absence from Pirates' matchday squads, according to Sunday World.

The Buccaneers' last game as a winger was a goalless draw with Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League on December 7, 2024.

Saleng's absence has been ascribed to "undisclosed personal reasons" despite not being formally listed as injured, raising questions about his future with the team.

Salary Discontent?

Adding fuel to the fire, Saleng’s close friend Boikanyo Maine claims that the player is unhappy with his wages at Pirates.

“We are requesting that Pirates consider what he wants,” Maine told Sunday World.

“It’s unfair—imagine getting R70,000 while your contribution in most matches speaks volumes, and someone else is getting R500,000.”

Saleng’s mother, Makie Tsoeu, and father, Thabo Tsoeu, echoed similar concerns, with Thabo revealing the emotional toll the situation has taken on their family.

“He is the one who cares for us at home, and seeing his profession in such a state crushes my heart,” Thabo said.

“I wish he could tell me what is really bothering him before it’s too late. The problem is the contract.”

Bafana Bafana Call-Up Despite Club Exile

Despite his absence from Pirates, Saleng was included in the Bafana Bafana squad for their African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier against Egypt on March 9.

“If he was not an important asset, Bafana wouldn’t have called him,” Maine pointed out.

The winger was part of the starting lineup in South Africa’s CHAN qualifier against Egypt, offering him a chance to prove his worth and possibly force his way back into Pirates’ plans.

Future Uncertain – Chiefs Monitoring Situation?

With Pirates facing a grueling period in their season, speculation is growing over whether Jose Riveiro will reintegrate Saleng to ease squad fatigue.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs are rumored to be monitoring the situation closely, possibly considering a shock move for the winger.

With five goals and an assist in 12 appearances this season, Saleng was in fine form before his exile. Whether he returns to action for Pirates or seeks an exit.
