Wydad AC have officially decided to keep faith in South African coach Rulani Mokwena despite intense criticism from fans following a five-match winless streak.

Winless run threatens Champions League hopes

The Casablanca giants have failed to win any of their last five matches across the Botola Pro and Throne Cup, a slump that has cast serious doubts over their chances of qualifying for next season’s CAF Champions League. Wydad now trail league leaders AS FAR by four points with just a few rounds remaining.

Following an emergency meeting, the club’s board reportedly reviewed the team's poor form and the conditions outlined in Mokwena’s contract.

Second-place clause under scrutiny

Mokwena’s deal includes a performance-based clause that requires Wydad to secure at least a second-place league finish. With that target now under threat, the club has opted to delay any dismissal decision until the end of the season.

Potential replacement lined up

Despite recent setbacks, including a Throne Cup exit and a draw in the Casablanca Derby, Wydad will keep Mokwena for now—partly due to the coach’s refusal to leave by mutual consent.

Should Mokwena exit before the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the U.S., Mohamed Amine Benhachem is expected to step in and guide the team during the global event.

Mokwena, who signed a three-year contract last summer, is currently the highest-paid coach in Morocco with a monthly salary of $45,000.
