Mofokeng’s Early Brace Stuns Sundowns as Pirates Keep Title Race Alive
Relebohile Mofokeng delivered a sensational performance, scoring twice inside the first five minutes to lead Orlando Pirates to a 2-1 victory over league leaders Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium on Sunday.
Pirates Strike Early
The Buccaneers wasted no time, racing into a 2-0 lead through Mofokeng’s clinical finishing. Evidence Makgopa set up the first goal with a precise cutback, which Mofokeng slotted home. Just 70 seconds later, the 20-year-old doubled his tally with a curling effort that ricocheted in off the post, sending the home fans into a frenzy.
They were unable to penetrate the Pirates' defense despite Sundowns' constant pressure. As the first half came to an end, the Pirates were in control, with Lucas Ribeiro and Peter Shalulile missing opportunities and Grant Kekana hitting the post.
Sundowns’ Fightback Falls Short
Sundowns regrouped in the second half, dominating possession and eventually pulling one back in the 66th minute through Khuliso Mudau, assisted by Iqraam Rayners. However, Pirates held firm defensively, sealing a massive three points in the title race.
League Standings and What’s Next
The victory trims Sundowns’ lead to 15 points, with Pirates holding four games in hand. While Sundowns remain on course for an eighth consecutive Premiership title, this result gives the Buccaneers renewed hope.
Sundowns will next face Stellenbosch FC on April 5, while Pirates take on Polokwane City a day later as the season reaches a thrilling climax.
