MLS Week 20 Recap: San Diego Take Western Lead as Union Extend Unbeaten Run

While the FIFA Club World Cup draws global attention, MLS rolled on midweek, with Matchday 20 bringing dramatic shifts across both conferences. As Philly Sports Network reported, San Diego FC surged to the top of the West, while the Philadelphia Union extended their league-best unbeaten streak.

San Diego delivered a 5-3 statement win at Vancouver, dethroning the Whitecaps. Milan Iloski stole the show with four goals, including a first-half hat-trick. Tomas Ángel capped off the performance in stoppage time, sending the expansion side to first place in the West and second overall in the Supporters’ Shield race.

Over in the East, Philadelphia secured a scrappy 1-0 win at Chicago Fire, with Bruno Damiani converting a penalty in the 10th minute. It was his third goal of the season and enough to push the Union to 11 games unbeaten. A pivotal matchup with Columbus awaits on Sunday.

Minnesota United stayed in the mix with a 3-1 win over Houston Dynamo, highlighted by Bongokuhle Hlongwane’s brace. In Kansas City, Sporting pulled off a stoppage-time miracle, with Mason Toye equalizing in the 93rd minute and Dejan Joveljic netting the winner in the 96th.

The most chaotic fixture unfolded in San Jose, where Dallas lost 4-2 and finished the game with nine men. Petar Musa had opened the scoring for the visitors, but red cards to Kaick Ferreira and Sebastien Ibeagha paved the way for a comeback led by Cristian Arango and Josef Martínez.

At the season’s midpoint, Philadelphia look strong atop the East. But in the West, the race remains wide open, and Matchday 20 reminded everyone how quickly things can turn.
