MLS Delays Potential Calendar Shift Until at Least 2027 MLS Delays Potential Calendar Shift Until at Least 2027

MLS owners did not vote on aligning the league's schedule with the international calendar during Thursday’s Board of Governors meeting in Chicago. According to Sports Business Journal, the league confirmed that the earliest such a change could happen is the 2027 season, eliminating the possibility of implementing it right after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

“We clearly have work to do to figure out whether or not we can move over the international calendar,” said Commissioner Don Garber after the session. “No decision has been made, and frankly, I’m not sure whether or not we have all the support we need to be able to achieve that.”

In a formal statement, MLS said its owners have approved “a second phase of exploration into a potential move to the international soccer calendar, along with a continued evaluation of the league’s regular season and playoff formats.” The next phase will involve stakeholder consultations and the development of a comprehensive transition plan.

LAFC co-owner Larry Berg, the only executive to comment publicly, described the meeting as a chance to weigh bold ideas and provide feedback. “It was an opportunity for the league to present and recommend some big, bold moves,” he said, acknowledging that owners discussed both the promise and logistical challenges of the proposal.

Thursday’s outcome may come as a relief to critics worried about winter matches in northern markets like Minnesota or Toronto, and to club executives seeking more time to adjust contracts, venues, and sponsorships. For supporters of the plan, the delay could be seen as a missed chance to redefine MLS at a time of growing global attention.

Garber, however, remained confident. “If we can get this done, we’ll fully be able to capitalize on the momentum of the World Cup,” he said. “This would be one of the most significant decisions MLS has ever made.”
