Mikel Raises Selection Concerns Over Super Eagles Squad
Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has questioned the integrity of Nigeria’s squad selection for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, suggesting head coach Eric Chelle may not have had full control. Chelle recently named a 28-man squad for the tournament in Morocco, sparking debate nationwide loudly.
Speaking on his Obi One Podcast, Mikel hinted at outside interference, saying, “I don't think the right players are being selected… I think the manager doesn't have the full authority… there's a lot of influence on his selection.” He warned such pressure could hurt performance.
Mikel compared the situation to late coach Stephen Keshi before the 2014 World Cup. Meanwhile, the Super Eagles opened camp with 25 players ahead of Tuesday’s friendly against Egypt, as Nigeria prepare for Group C matches against Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda.
