Miguel Herrera to Meet Keylor Navas in Argentina in Hopes of National Team Return
Miguel Herrera will travel to Rosario to meet with Keylor Navas in an attempt to persuade the veteran goalkeeper to come out of international retirement. Navas, currently playing for Newell’s Old Boys, stepped away from the Costa Rica national team in May last year, but according to Herrera, his decision might not have been entirely for sporting reasons.
In an interview with ESPN, Herrera revealed his plans to speak with Navas in person: “The only international player we’re visiting is Keylor Navas. We want to see what the next steps are with him.”
“We have a very extensive conversation with him lined up. There are several matters still pending, including what happened that led to him stepping away from the national team,” the coach added.
Back in March, Navas responded to Herrera’s comments. Although he praised the coach’s experience and intelligence, he downplayed the idea of a reunion strictly tied to the national team. “He can say whatever he wants. He’s a very smart coach, he knows a lot about football... If he has something to do in Argentina, I think I’ll end up talking with him. It doesn’t necessarily have to be about the national team.”
The 38-year-old goalkeeper, a former Real Madrid standout, emphasized he is enjoying a quiet life in Rosario and isn’t too eager to return to the intense spotlight of international football.
