Mamelodi Sundowns are gearing up for their Club World Cup campaign. However, unlike many other participants in the tournament, the team has not made a single transfer. The head coach has shed light on the reasoning behind this decision.
Details: Head coach Miguel Cardoso explained why Mamelodi Sundowns did not take advantage of the special summer transfer window to strengthen their squad. According to him, the team simply would not have had enough time to integrate new players. He also compared the club's situation to that of Al Ahly Cairo and Wydad.
Quote: "We didn't have much time for training. For example, let's look at the African teams: Wydad didn't take part in the Champions League, their league ended quite early, and they even changed their coach. So, they had a period of rebuilding and it made sense to bring in new players to kickstart a new process.
Al Ahly — it's a similar story: a new coach, new approaches, new training sessions — so why not? If a new philosophy is being introduced, then why not bring in new players as well?" Cardoso explained.
He added that the club has reacted positively to the decision to keep the squad unchanged and not pursue any new signings.
Mamelodi Sundowns will face Ulsan Hyundai in their opening match of the Club World Cup group stage in the early hours of Wednesday, June 18. Kick-off is at 00:00 Central European Time.
Reminder: Today, Golden Arrows completed the signing of former Sundowns striker. The club managed to secure a contract with 23-year-old forward Jerome Karelse.
