Mexico City lights up for World Cup countdown Mexico City lights up for World Cup countdown

Exactly one year before the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off, Mexico City marked the milestone with a vibrant display: dozens of its landmarks lit up in green, celebrating the approaching tournament.

As one of the host cities, alongside Guadalajara and Monterrey, the capital unveiled its official countdown clock, a symbolic reminder that the global football celebration is just 365 days away. But the main spectacle came later, when over 40 of the city's most iconic sites were bathed in green light—Mexico’s national color and a nod to the country's pride.

Key landmarks such as the Zócalo, the Angel of Independence, the Palace of Fine Arts, Chapultepec’s Ferris Wheel, and the Government Palace joined the tribute, transforming the cityscape into a glowing preview of what’s to come. The initiative, led by Mexico City’s mayor Clara Brugada, signals the beginning of the World Cup atmosphere.

Mexico City will host five of the 13 matches scheduled in the country, including the tournament’s grand opening at the legendary Estadio Azteca. Up to four of those could feature the Mexican national team. The 2026 World Cup begins on June 11—but in Mexico City, the excitement is already in full swing.
