The new MLS season has kicked off, and in the opening match, Inter Miami played to a 2-2 draw against New York City. Messi provided two assists in the game, setting a new record.
Details: With these two assists, the Argentine forward has now registered 40 goal contributions in just 26 MLS matches. This marks a new league record, as Lionel Messi’s tally now stands at 21 goals and 20 assists.
Additionally, Messi has now recorded 381 career assists, leaving him just 19 short of reaching the 400-assist milestone.
As is tradition, Inter Miami’s match was attended by several high-profile figures. Among them was renowned French midfielder Paul Pogba, who was spotted in the stands.
Reminder: After the final whistle, the Argentine approached referee Rosendo Mendoza to voice his displeasure—putting it mildly—over several decisions. The referee attempted to de-escalate the situation, but Messi continued his protests, prompting Mendoza to issue him a yellow card. Even that, however, did little to calm him down.
