Messi or Ronaldo? Real Madrid legend Marcelo shares his opinion on the greatest footballer in history

The legendary Real Madrid defender Marcelo has weighed in on the debate that has been ongoing for many years. In an interview with La Revuelta, the Brazilian shared his opinion on who he considers the greatest player in history, Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi.

Despite having played for many years at Real alongside Ronaldo and being his close friend, the Brazilian chose to abstain from picking between the Portuguese and the Argentine.

"The greatest footballer in history? I don't think there is a right answer here. We are lucky to play in the same era as Cristiano and Messi. I don't like comparisons, but I must admit that they were both amazing, and I was lucky to be part of their rivalry," stated Marcelo.

The Brazilian also noted that many, in their comparisons between these players, completely forget to enjoy watching their rivalry. He stated that Messi and Cristiano pushed each other to become better and stronger, which positively impacted both of them.

It's worth noting that Marcelo retired in February 2025. He played for Real from 2007 to 2022, appearing in 546 matches, scoring 38 goals, and providing 103 assists.
